PowerBook Essay Complaints

In my latest draft, I realized that I am struggling with the analysis and conclusion parts of my essay. From peer edit day, I learned that my analysis should include less summarizing and a better use of my quotes. While writing this draft, I thought that summarizing was so important but now I realize that it should only be a small amount of your body paragraphs. I wanted to make sure that the reader knew what the situation in every sub-story I talked about was. But, I guess I took it overboard, so I will definitely need to cut down on that. Also, one of the comments left on my paper was about my conclusion. I failed to re-explain some key things. I also need to develop the concluding paragraph with a little more analysis. I believe if I fix these structural mistakes, I will be able to turn in a quality paper next Tuesday.

yes! i remember reading your paper and i remember there being a lot of summarizing of the book. i was always taught in high school to write an essay as if your reader has already read the book. this would avoid the need to summarize any events because the reader woudl have already read the book and been familiar with the plot. definitely try to focus on your analysis of the book by including quotes from the book as well as your own thoughts. i dont quite remember your conclusion, but i always think about restating what i have mentioned in my opening paragraph, and then try to bring up some new question or connection to leave the reader thinking about the topic more deeply.

Because I read your paper, I know what your talking about! Especially after meeting with Kirstyn, I realized (and thought I would pass on to you) the fact that summarizing really isn’t important and just takes up space in your essay because the audience who will be reading your paper already has a background of what the sub-stories are about! GOOD luck!

Yeah i think drawing textual support and analyzing it is really important- more important than summarizing. Summarize for like a few sentences, use your key quote, and analyze to make sense of how it supports your thesis!

Hey Tom, I think if you got some bigger quotes that have a lot of key points in them you’ll feel better about your paper. This way you can analyze it and tie in your main points together. Towards the end of the paragraph, you can kind of summarize what you said earlier, but don’t overdue it. When you get to your conclusion, this is where you want to summarize all your paragraphs together. Good luck, AJ
